Book Commemorates Swimming Champion Killed in Parkland Shooting
Proceeds from Soul of a Swimmer to provide swim lessons, clinics, scholarships
(Dec. 13, 2021) – Soul of a Swimmer, a book about the life of Parkland shooting victim Nicholas Dworet, is available today from CG Sports Publishing. The story recounts Nick’s life as a competitive swimmer in South Florida and his mother’s native Sweden, which he had hoped to represent in the 2020 Olympic Games.
Nick’s goals were cut short on Feb. 14, 2018, when he was one of 17 people killed in a shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. His brother, Alex, was among the many wounded.
Soul of a Swimmer does not focus on how Nick’s life ends. Rather, it is the story of how a community comes together to support a child with raw talent and chronicles Nick’s development into an accomplished and ambitious competitive swimmer. Through interviews with his parents, coaches, friends, and teammates, author Carla Albano presents an athlete’s coming-of-age story and leaves the reader wistful for what certainly was a bright future for an exceptional young man.
“Nick had the whole world ahead of him, and nothing was going to hold him back,” Albano says. “I have no doubt he would have achieved his Olympic dreams and made us all proud.”
Albano, a swimmer herself, from Hollywood, Florida, near Parkland, first learned of the shooting when she was training for a long-distance ocean swim the Florida Keys. She returned home to a community in mourning, and when she learned that a swimmer was among the victims, she felt compelled to learn and tell his story, so “we all know what we’ve missed by his not being here,” she says.
Soul of a Swimmer starts with a look at Nick’s parents’ lives before he was born, and it follows Nick’s journey through his early years as a precocious toddler in swimming lessons, to an accelerated rise through the ranks of club swimming, to a brief-but-worrisome detour from the sport and healthy living, to a triumphant return as a dedicated high school standout who signs a letter of intent to swim in college at the University of Indianapolis. The shooting is detailed in the final few pages.
Albano is donating 100 percent of the proceeds from Soul of a Swimmer to the Nicholas Dworet Memorial Trust. The funds will be used to support swim lessons, swim clinics, and scholarships for swimmers to attend college, so that Nick’s legacy lives on in the pool and beyond.
Soul of a Swimmer is available from Amazon and wherever books are sold.
