Sports Setbacks are at the Center of Therapist’s New Book
Winners Lose, Too is available from CG Sports Publishing
(Oct. 10, 2022) – Winners Lose, Too, a new book from therapist and coach Thomas Oberdorfer and CG Sports Publishing, is available for preorder.
Oberdorfer is a retired therapist who had a decades-long career in the Washington, D.C. area, working with families and young people. In his practice and in his experience as a lacrosse coach, he recognized the need for role models who had overcome setbacks and achieved success. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Oberdorfer used the extra time afforded him from lockdowns and not seeing clients in person to interview accomplished athletes about failure and loss. The result is Winners Lose, Too.
Winners Lose, Too profiles Olympians and Paralympians, players from professional sports leagues, as well as NCAA champions and coaches. Oberdorfer lets the stories speak for themselves, leaving the lessons to the reader, as he believes everyone will take away something different from each example.
“When I started writing, I hoped to reach young people who maybe felt lost or desperate after suffering disappointment or after not reaching a goal. But in the end, this book has lessons for people of all ages, for sports lovers and those who are not. As much as we hate to lose, it is losing—not winning—that teaches the most valuable lessons. How do we go about supporting that mindset?” Oberdorfer said.
The book contains interviews with more than 20 athletes and includes Oberdorfer’s own story of being cut from his college lacrosse team. Each chapter provides an uplifting look at the traits often attributed to achievement: perseverance, grit, resolve, and hope.
