Boulder endurance runner Vicki Ash Hunter to hold book signing

Her memoir, “Running and Returning,” achieves best-seller status

(July 21, 2022) – Boulder author and endurance runner Vicki Ash Hunter. Ph.D., will sign copies of her popular and best-selling memoir, Running and Returning – Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World, at the Crossroads Commons Barnes and Noble bookstore on Saturday, July 30, at 2 p.m.

The book, published by CG Sports Publishing last month, has been an Amazon best-seller in two categories: running and jogging and substance abuse recovery. In the book, Hunter tells her family’s story through the lens of running, trauma, and addiction, focusing on her own, her mother’s, and her daughter’s struggles.

The book opens with a harrowing chapter detailing a life-threatening and life-altering car accident on Magnolia Road above Boulder that Hunter experienced when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Jade. Hunter recovered but in many ways was forever changed, and she questions the role the accident played in Jade’s future: Could the traumatic pregnancy have contributed to Jade’s eventual turn to drugs?

Hunter also takes a hard look at her mother’s depression and dependence on both food and drugs and how growing up around such influences may have contributed to her own obsession with exercise, which began once she started running longer and longer distances.

Reader reviews of the book have been positive. J. Madden says, “(Running and Returning) is for every runner who has struggled to find that elusive balance between our need to run and our need to care for those we love—and the inevitable compromises along the way. The book is also for those who live with a “running addict” and want insight into what drives the obsession. Vicki shows us how running is so much more than simply a form of exercise, but also a way of coping with emotional pain and finding happiness.”

Hunter is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon (1988), and her running resume is stacked with some of the most elite and iconic races in the country, including the Boston and Pike’s Peak  marathons. Now in her 60s, Hunter continues to compete, often outrunning much younger competition. She is retired from the University of Colorado, where she taught political science.
