Endurance runner to hold signing at Boulder Book Store

Vicki Ash Hunter’s “Running and Returning” makes an impact

(Sept. 1, 2022) – Boulder author and endurance runner Vicki Ash Hunter. Ph.D., will sign copies of her popular and best-selling memoir, Running and Returning – Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World, at Boulder Book Store on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

In the book, Hunter tells her family’s story through the lens of running, trauma, and addiction, focusing on her own, her mother’s, and her daughter’s struggles. It was published by CG Sports Publishing in June and has been an Amazon best-seller in two categories: running and jogging and substance abuse recovery.

The book opens with a harrowing chapter detailing a life-threatening and life-altering car accident on Magnolia Road above Boulder that Hunter experienced when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Jade. Hunter recovered but in many ways was forever changed, and she questions the role the accident played in Jade’s future: Could the traumatic pregnancy have contributed to Jade’s eventual turn to drugs?

Jade’s story has especially resonated with readers, which Hunter appreciates. “It was scary to reveal so much about my daughter’s struggles,” she said, “and I did so only with her permission. Our goal in putting it all out there was to give other families going through similar circumstances some hope. Because when you’re in the thick of drug abuse, you can feel so helpless, both as the user and someone who loves them.”

Hunter also takes a hard look at her mother’s depression and dependence on food and drugs and how growing up around such influences may have contributed to her own obsession with exercise, which began once she started running longer and longer distances.

Hunter is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon (1988), and her running resume is stacked with some of the country's most elite and iconic races, including the Boston and Pike’s Peak marathons. Now in her 60s, Hunter continues to compete, often outrunning much younger competition. She retired from the University of Colorado, where she taught political science.

Tickets for the event at Boulder Book Store are $5, and seats must be reserved. Attendees will receive a coupon worth $5 that can be used at the store on the day of the event. Sign up here.
