Author of football’s “The Grass is Always Greener” to host book signing

Event at Barnes and Noble will benefit United Cerebral Palsy

(Sept. 7, 2022) – San Diego author Brian Gushue will kick off football season with a book signing at the Mira Mesa Barnes & Noble on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m., giving football fans and anyone with a dream a chance to meet and ask questions of the man who attended more than 500 NFL games over 40 years. A portion of sales from the event will benefit United Cerebral Palsy, an organization dear to Gushue.

Gushue attended his 500th NFL game in 2017 at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field, and he published a book about his accomplishment last year. It’s called The Grass is Always Greener – One Football Fan’s Improbable Quest to Attend 500 NFL Games. The title is a nod to Gushue’s own caveat on the goal: the 500 games had to be played on natural grass.

Gushue is no stranger to challenges—he has cerebral palsy, and he was told many times that his quest was too much, too hard, and unlikely to come true. Such sentiment fueled his desire to not only finish but surpass what he set out to do. Now, Gushue plans to see every NFL team play 25 times – still only on grass fields. He has plans to see 16 games in seven cities during the 2022-23 season.

The Grass is Always Greener is Gushue’s account, opinions, and insights into the teams, games, and venues he visited over the years. The book contains photos and a list of every game that counted toward his goal, plus 50  additional games he attended since hitting that mark. Gushue also offers a “halftime” chapter where he outlines his opinions on how the game could be improved for both fans and players (shorter quarters and another bye week, to start).

The Grass is Always Greener is a football book, for sure, but it’s also a book about friends and family and the fan experience. It’s for anyone who has a passion that maybe not everyone understands, but that everyone can appreciate. I’m especially proud to combine my love for football with support for United Cerebral Palsy by doing this event.”

The Mira Mesa Barnes & Noble is at 10775 Westview Pkwy, San Diego, CA 92126.
